Urine is collected in the bladder, which is an organ on the form of a balloon. After going through the tubes from the kidneys by the special tubes, ureters, urine appears in the bladder and is released from it through the urethra – a narrow tube – in the amount of about 200-300 ml every time a person urinates. The process starts when the above mentioned amount of urine collects in the bladder and it starts contracting. Simultaneously, a special muscle that we use for urination control – the internal sphincter muscle- gets a signal to either squeeze or relieve. This is how the system of urination works.

The symptom of urinary retention caused by the bladder stones is painful sensations in the process as well as pain in the region of abdomen.

Urinary retention can also be caused by vaginal prolapse. This condition happens when the anterior wall of the vagina starts prolapsing and this makes the bladder to change its natural position – usually it slides aside, which leads to the blockage of urethra and problems with passing the urine.
