Dogs Can Prevent Children from Having Eczema and Asthma

Dogs are able to protect people and children in particular not only from attacks and other physical threats, but also from certain diseases. For example, the U.S. researchers from the Allergy and Immunology Research Center (ACAAI) assure that when there is a dog in a family, children are less prone to eczema and asthma. Dogs and eczema in children

The ACAAI scientists have conducted a study on this topic, which examined influence of a dog’s presence on mothers and their children. The conclusions were presented at the annual scientific meeting, it is supposed that the phenomenon can be explained by the specific hormone in canine saliva. Eczema often starts in infancy. And according to the ACAAI allergist, a dog’s presence in the house before the child’s birth significantly decreases the risk of eczema development, but only until a child is 10 years old.

Dogs and asthma in children

Scientists have also tested how dogs influence children with asthma. During the experiment participants less than two years old spent about an hour a day with a dog. As a result, the risk of developing asthma decreased by 40%. Why so?

According to the scientists of the University of Baltimore, dogs carry many microorganisms that have a positive impact on human immune system, health and wellbeing.

Sanitary precautions

Despite all great healing benefits from our beloved pets, scientists strongly recommend to bear in mind sanitary norms and keep your dog clean. A few tips will help to be on a safe side:

  • Do not let the dog sleep in the bedroom and especially on the bed overnight. Better restrict it to a few specific rooms.
  • Clean the house regularly to remove possible airborne allergens.
  • Thoroughly clean the hands after playing with the dog.
  • And wash your pet at least once a week! It will be happy and clean☺.
