Cholesterol is a fat-like substance, which travels around the body in microscopic protein sacs (lipoproteins). What we refer to as ‘bad cholesterol’ are low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which are relatively big in size and have a fluffy structure. Increased amount of this bad cholesterol penetrates into vessels’ walls and forms plaques. Over the time these plaques cause luminal occlusion, which impedes blood circulation and leads to cardiovascular diseases.

Although there are an increasing number of claims that cardiac and cranial disorders are not related to cholesterol, there are good reasons to believe that the cholesterol factor still persists. One of recent studies, which was carried out as part of an anti-cholesterol drug development project, confirmed that cholesterol does cause deterioration of blood vessels. The goal of the study was to check a PCSK9 inhibitor drug. PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9) is an enzyme, which adjust cholesterol level: the more PCSK9 you have in your body, the lower your cholesterol is and the less likely you are to develop a cholesterol-related cardiac or brain issue. What prompted the scientists to hold the research was an observation that people with low PCSK9 production had lower LDL levels. The new drug’s effect consists in PCSK9 inhibition, and it has proved instrumental in reducing cholesterol and related health issues.
