Wellness – What does It Mean?
What approaches and claims hide behind the new word wellness? Everyone sees something else behind wellness. On the one hand we feel a new life, on the other hand, including a gentle fitness movement. For many it means simply feel good all around. Most think of rest and relaxation. Each of these definitions is in itself correct, but only a part of the complex concept of wellness is accurate. Meanwhile wellness to a consumer trend has become quite huge.
Even in the ancient words were as SPA (Sanus per aquam) an expression for bathing. The Roman baths served not only the physical cleaning, but also the sensual pleasures. In the Middle Ages was a wellness experience for a privileged minority.
In 1961, the word wellness by the doctor Halbert Dunn from the concepts of “wellbeing” and “fitness” was formed. It was the passive wellbeing of the active range of motion as an important component of wellness was added. With this formulation is a new global awareness in the health sector emerged.
In the ’70s through the University of Stevens Point in Wisconsin with the wellness initiative was a long-term breakthrough. This takes a holistic approach to wellbeing at the 3 pillars, body, mind and soul is based.
In Europe, the wellness movement in 1996 was set in motion.
The wellness needs, researchers say trend is a reaction to the stress potentials, the man by today’s communication and technology society is exposed to health risks. This trend is affecting the lifestyles and consumption patterns of many people. Wellness clothing, spa vacation, spa recipes, wellness car, spa food, wellness floor etc.
Associate with wellness consumers something positive, pleasant and exclusive. For wellness experts is rather a philosophy of life – healthy movement – conscious diet – relaxation and stress management.
From holistic side are rather based body, mind and soul for the welfare of the people responsible. Healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, healthy eating and serenity, relaxation, attractive appearance, enjoyment, joy, fun, happiness, harmony, social contacts, recognition and esteem, freedom from worry, creativity, imagination, positive life attitude.
So wellness describes a state quite differently by each person. The activities that contribute to the feeling of wellness that should be as pleasant afterwards. Wellness is a large part influenced by their own initiative, on a voluntary basis with various options to be exercised.
