Ways to Prevent and Treat Dental Caries

Dental cavity or caries is an old disease. Caries damages the teeth. If the damaged tissue is left untreated, it may cause extreme pain, infection and even tooth extraction, in some severe cases even death. Dental caries is a disease that has been present for ages: starting from the Bronze, Iron ages till the present time. As a matter of fact tooth decay has become more common since the introduction of Coca-Cola in the 19th century.

Poor diet habits are the main cause of tooth cavity all over the world. In fact, dental caries can be spotted in numerous ways. Mostly it occurs in the form of a chalky white spot which develops and becomes a brown cavity large in size. Many caries can be easily seen with the eye, but for some cases x-rays are necessary to indicate less visible zones and predict the tooth future.

Tooth decay is often provoked by bacteria which release acid to the mouth. This acid damages the teeth as the special teeth content makes them sensitive to the substances with lower pH balance. As a matter of fact your teeth appear in a permanent process of demineralization. If pH levels reduce extremely, the deterioration accelerates, and this causes decay. The good news is that there are treatments to be used for restoring the teeth surface, however there isn’t a treatment yet which might be able to restore large amounts of the surface. It is advised that everybody should stick to proper oral hygiene so that to protect themselves from caries development.

All in all, it is possible to increase the chances of disease prevention by following several easy guidelines:

  • It is highly important to brush the teeth regularly, basically two times a day. It is better to be done in the morning when you wake up and in the evening before going to bed.
  • It is also recommended that you floss your teeth every day. Remember to floss below the gumline in order to get rid of any food particles or plaque that might happen to be there.
  • You had better limit the consumption of sugary beverages and foods. The fact is that sugar happens to be the worst substance for the teeth. It starts eating away at the tooth enamel soon after you eat sweets.
  • Visit the dentist at least two times a year. Making an appointment with the dentist every 5-6 months, you will have the teeth cleaned professionally. Besides, the doctor can catch any dental caries in its early stages, which will let you avoid further complications of the condition.
