Anxiety Disorders and Treatment

Anxiety disorders are some of the most widespread mental disorders and most of us have experienced anxiety at some point in our lives. Perhaps you have suffered from anxiety but were not aware of it. It can often be confused with worrying, feelings of uneasiness, panic or fear. In fact, these can all be symptoms of anxiety.

What distinguishes anxiety from some of its symptoms like fear and worrying is its cause. We normally know why we experience fear, i.e. we can pinpoint a certain underlying cause. The cause of anxiety, however, is rarely something that we can identify easily. It is a general mood.

Yet, anxiety is not the same thing as an anxiety disorder. Anxiety itself can be positive in that it can help us deal with a certain situation. When anxiety reaches high levels, however, we start suffering from an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders can be very harmful not only to our mental health, but also to our physical health. Its symptoms may include a weakening of our immune system, which can trigger a wide array of other illnesses.

Like depression and other mental disorders, there are successful ways of treating anxiety disorders. It is essential to seek anxiety treatment at an early stage. Many people do not take the feelings of anxiety they are having seriously. This only prolongs suffering and may lead to other more serious problems, especially if the anxiety develops into a long-lasting anxiety disorder. Anxiety treatments usually involve three components: helping patients change their behavioral patterns, teaching them how to deal with the symptoms and prescribing certain medicines.  While treatment may in some cases require a prolonged period of time, it is possible to feel its positive effects within a couple of weeks.

People are often hesitant to seek treatment because they worry about what their colleagues, friends and family might think if they find out. This social pressure is a huge problem when it comes to treating anxiety.

Nevertheless, if you are suffering from anxiety or know somebody who is, remember that it is a perfectly normal and common problem and should be seen as such. If not treated in due time, it can leave extremely negative effects on the lives of its sufferers and people close to them.

Besides the mental and physical symptoms, there are also many social symptoms, such as career, family, relationship and even economical problems. There is no reason to allow an anxiety disorder to ruin your life – it can be treated successfully!
