Hair loss can also be a warning signal of aging as well as symptoms of any particular disease. However, a factor that has considerable effect on health of hair or alopecia (medical term of hair loss) is diet that most of us tend to ignore.

It is a proven fact that nutritional deficiencies contribute immensely in increased hair falling. This hair fall is due to weakening of hair shaft causing hair breakage, leading to hair fall and slow hair re-growth. It is a balanced diet with regular exercise that is very important to physical and mental well-being. Hair growth also requires proper care and balanced nutrition to sport a lustrous look and prevent from further thinning or shedding.

It is essentially, eating a balanced diet with proteins, fatty acids and vitamins coupled with drinking plenty of water that will help in preventing hair loss.

Here is a short synopsis on the food items that must be included in a daily diet.

Fruits and Vegetables: Fruits including melon, bananas, oranges, berries, apples and green leafy vegetables such as spinach, and cabbage provide with additional vitamins for proper hair growth. These food items are rich in vitamin C that is essential in producing the connective tissue of hair termed as collagen.

Dairy Food Items: The dairy food items including milk, eggs and cheese need to be included in the daily diet as they are rich source of proteins and vitamin B12 that is significant for overall hair growth and improved blood circulation in the hair tissues for proper nourishment.

Omega3 fatty acids: Lean meat, fishes such as salmon and mackerel are good source of vitamin that helps in hair growth and maintenance.

Nuts and soybeans: Most important source of folic acid that helps prevents hair loss.

Other items: Diet rich in zinc, iron and copper is important to maintain healthy hair growth. The food items include whole-grain products and nuts (rich in zinc), seafood and organ meat (rich in copper), beetroot and dried fruits (rich in iron).

Apart from these, salt is an essential ingredient in diet. Salt is important to keep water balance of the body and also acts as useful electrolytes for replenishment of body nutrients However, if our diet is tossed with too much salt, kidneys and liver need to work overtime, taxing the body immune system as well as the digestive system leading to physical stress resulting in hair loss. Additionally, one must drink plenty of water to keep the body well hydrated and prevent too much hair breaking.

Diet rich in junk food and processed food can have an overall harmful effect on the body, leading to several diseases and ultimately the consequence is excessive hair falling. One must also avoid too much sugar in the food and hence try replacing the carbonated drinks with sugar-free juices.

So, fall in love with sea food, dried fruits, eggs and green leafy vegetables to bid adieu to caffeine, artificial colorings and chemical preservatives in the many junk foods.
