Postnatal Hair Loss

Pregnancy and birth of a child is a great experience for every woman. And a really hard one. However, it does not matter as long as you give birth to a new life. Still, a woman has to cope with different problems during and after pregnancy. Her body undergoes a lot of changes and she has to get used to them. One of the unpleasant postnatal effects of childbirths is hair loss. It is a pretty frequent condition and about 50% of women have to face it after they give birth to their child.

The reason of this condition is hormones. Their increase or lack results in the changes that new mother experience with their hair. During the time of pregnancy women have excess of estrogen in their organisms and therefore their hair is usually gets thicker. Due to estrogen metabolic rate also increases which contributes to hair growth as well.

However, after the child birth, the process gets reversed. The body starts to produce less estrogen in order to return to normal levels and hair loss takes place, naturally.

However, this is not really a serious reason to worry as it is natural and the body is capable to get back to normal on its own and so will the hair. It might be more challenging for those women who have got very thin hair provided the predetermined period is over and nothing has improved.

What can you do to speed up the improvement process?

The best thing to do is proper care. Pigtails, cornrows, hair weaves and braids are better to be avoided in this period in order to avoid unnecessary stress on the scalp. Regular massage is also very beneficial as well as brushing. Massage can be done with oils such as lavender, neroli, patchouli and sandalwood. Biotin and silica containing shampoos and conditioners are also good helpers. Do not brush and rub wet hair as it makes them weaker.

One more thing is really important – a healthy balanced diet.

Pregnant and postnatal women should eat balanced meals in order to get proper nutrition. It is recommended to consult a doctor on this account and include vitamins and minerals in your daily allowance as well. You will see that your hair will get better in short time.
