Hair transplantation is a surgical hair restoration in case of alopecia. Not only men suffer from this disease, women can also experience intensive hair loss. According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, 21 million of women in the U.S.A. suffer from hair loss making up 40% of all the patients.
There are 4 Reasons of Intensive Hair Loss for Women
- Andogenetic Alopecia is caused by the influence of androgens but it can also be the cause of heredity.
- Telogen Effluvium is the phenomenon which happens with the body after the stress (from 6 weeks to 3 months) or it can become a disorder lasting for several months or years.
- Anagen Effluvium is usually connected to chemotherapy after it influences the metabolic activity of hair follicles.
- Traction alopecia is the condition of the locally traumatized hair that were injured by extensions or tight hairstyles.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)Nowadays, Follicular Unit Transplantation is the main method of hair transplantation. According to this method, the graft in the shape of an ellipse is removed from the back of the head. After that separate follicular units are prepared from this donor patch and implanted into the microholes on the recipient zone. The FUT method provides amazing results as far as hair is engrafted in the natural shape of follicular units (hair roots). It gives an opportunity to obtain and transplant a big amount of follicular units in a short period of time with minimum loss of donor material and high viability of grafts (up to 92% and more). For example, there can be up to 5000 grafts during a procedure lasting four or five hours. The only disadvantage of FUT is a suture as a result of the excision of the graft in the donor area. Though, the modern technologies of the plastic reconstruction of the donor scar exclude its visible development on the back of the head. And even hairdressers will hardly notice it.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)When the Follicular Unit Extraction method is applied, the hair grafts are extracted one by one from the whole back of the head area or from the body. As a result, there are not any scarves after the procedure is finished. The only visible trace is red dots on the pores from which hair is extracted but they heal in several days and become invisible. The FUE method is recommended for hair loss from the I to V stages according to Norwood. It is also performed in case of posttraumatic and postambustial scarves, for restoring eyelashes and eyebrows. The grafts can be additionally taken from any part of the body including back, chest, beard and intimate areas. This approach makes it possible to transplant up to 4000 grafts during one session (6-8 hours). Nowadays, the FUE procedure that requires less than 1500 grafts is conducted without shaving.
Long Hair TransplantationIt is possible to transplant hair from 3 mm up to several centimeters (8 and more). The length of the transplanted material depends on the length of the hair on the back of patient’s head. This procedure is always performed by the strip method. There are many advantages of this approach, as far as you see the result when the surgical service is finished: the density of transplanted hair, how the hairline looks like and how the hair is styled. Moreover, long hair cover the redness after the surgery. It should be noticed, that transplanted hair start to fall out in 2-3 weeks what is normal. The transplanted follicle starts to reproduce new hair in 2-3 months that preserves all the initial features like the structure, the colour, the speed of growth and elasticity. The final effect will be seen in 12 months after the operation and the growth of transplanted hair continues for the whole life.
Body Hair Transplant (BHT)The Body Hair Transplant is relevant when a patient does not have enough hair on the back of the head for extracting or has to preserve them for some reasons. The hair is taken from different parts of the body and transplanted via the Follicular Unit Extraction method. The surgeon extract grafts one by one and there are no scarves left. The main areas for taking the donor material are the chest, arms, legs, beard and groin. Around 1000 grafts can be extracted during one session from one area. The transplanted hair adapt to the skin of the head and can grow longer than in initial places.
The decision whether you require hair transplantation or not must be made together with your doctor who will choose the method answering your personal needs best.
