Emotions and Overeating

There is a theory that emotions and overeating are interconnected. Though, it is not easy to prove nor that there were any solid facts. But it is true that somehow overeating patterns follow up certain emotional changes and this leads to weight problems frequently. Emotional factors influencing overeating in this respect have to be considered individually as well as socially and with the respect to family situation. Still, it can complicate the process of cause-outcome definition herder in some sense.

There are various emotions that make us to apply for these so-called “comfort foods” – depression and anxiety in the first place, but anger is not infrequent. When a person feels bad or upset he or she tends to eat more and the foods that seem to be tasty. The whole process seems to provide a relief and gives an impression that things are not that bad; however, this is only a temporary relief and as soon as the sensation wears off a person need something else again. If this is the only consolation, it may end up with overeating and overweight problems later.

Why else overeating is so wide-spread phenomenon. The thing is that not only the food and its taste are good and pleasant, but the whole cooking and eating process takes time and therefore distracts from any negative thoughts. Therefore people without any particular hobby or not involved in any sport or activity – anything that is able to distract – are so prone to overeating. Food and cooking provides the feeling of comfort and solace. That is why these foods are called “comfort foods”.

If you think that you over eat the best thing to do is to define the problem. Be honest with yourself – are you upset and tend to eat more than usual, even if you are not hungry? Do you seem to feel better after another ice-cream or a piece of cheese cake? Take a record of your eating and write down what you eat and when.

If you tend to eat when you are not particularly hungry, then why is it so? Perhaps, you are short of time, or you prefer certain place that is not always available when you are hungry, or this is a bad habit in the making, or you are depressed… The review of the problem will help to understand if it is really bad.

After you have defined a problem, start moving in the direction of its solution. Considering the reasons of your overeating, make alternations in your daily meal schedule and try to control your cravings. Stop this negative tendency until you end up with overweight. If you cannot stop binging at once, try to have something more useful and less harmful as a snack: an apple instead of a hamburger, for instance. And remember, that as soon as you identify the problem, it becomes easy to solve. Perhaps, if you do everything right, you will not only stay with your normal weight, but also lose some extra pounds.
