There are a lot of different diets and South beach diet is one of them. It was brought in life by Dr. Arthur Agatston and it presupposes the new way of eating including good fats and carbohydrates. With bad carbohydrates and fats a person only becomes hungrier and therefore gains more and more weight. South beach diet is good for heart and in some ways it is similar to Atkins diet.
This diet means that a person should eat more fruit and whole grain bread if compared to other carbohydrate diets. Moreover, it takes into consideration the blood sugar levels. Besides, it claims that a person on this diet is not required to exercise; it is thought to work on its own. South beach diet is not a low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet but it means that a person should eat right carbohydrates and right fats. In the period of the first two weeks the intake of carbohydrates is restricted. After two weeks a low glycemic index diet is introduced and saturated fats are changed for unsaturated.
The diet plan is divided into three periods:
- The first phase is the strictest one and it lasts two weeks while the intake of carbohydrates is restricted. Foods that are recommended: lean meats such as chicken, turkey, fish and shell fish. Also, low fat cheese, nuts, etc. It is expected that a person loses up to 12 ponds during this fortnight.
- The second phase presupposes the same allowance but with the introduction of some restricted foods in small amounts. It is expected that people continue to lose about 1-2 pounds during this phase.
- In the third phase, which is life-long, a person is expected to maintain the achieved state.
Low glycemic index diet and South beach diet have similar principles. It advices to consume fewer foods rich in saturated fats and instead choose some heart-healthy monounsaturated foods. However, mind that the extreme carbohydrate restrictions presupposed by the diet can cause lack of energy and may leave you weak.
The benefits of this diet are that your cholesterol and insulin levels will improve and you will lose the undesired weight. Moreover, you will not need any diet supplements; but if you like you can take fish oil capsules, and some multi vitamins.
The main principle is that there should be a balance between carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It is a very popular diet plan as it includes sensible approach to lifestyle and nutrition and also right carbohydrate intake.
