What causes urinary retention in women?
The degree of urinary retention differs dependant on the cause. The urine is kept in the bladder. It moves from kidneys to the bladder via the tubes called ureters and releases from urethra, a narrow tube. Every time when 200 – 300 ml of urine appears in the bladder, the brain gets the signal and makes the bladder start contractions. At the same time signals are sent to the muscle of internal sphincter, the muscle we squeeze trying to control urination.
Urinary tract infection is the common reason for urinary retention in women. If you experience urinary tract infection, you will have a burning feeling during urinating together with insufficient urine amount.
Obstruction caused by bladder stones is another cause of urinary retention in women. Due to the obstruction, the sufferers feel the urge to urinate but will experience difficulties in passing urine. If this condition is the reason for your problem, you will have abdominal pain and pain during urination along. There are cases when blood is seen in the urine.
Vaginal prolapse is when anterior wall in the vagina prolapses which causes the bladder lose its usual position. This provokes blockage of the urethra and makes the urination passage painful.
The use of particular medicines, including antihistamines, anti depressants, or drugs attributed to muscle spasms can cause urinary retention in women. Aside from this, if a person has had a surgery with anesthesia, this might result in urinary retention.
Dysfunctional voiding describes the health problem when the muscles surrounding the urethra cannot relax sufficiently, which makes it rather easy to pass urine from the bladder.
