Interesting Facts about Stages of Sleep

As the saying goes, "Blessed are those people who are too busy to have worries during the day and too sleepy to be concerned at night. Everyone will agree that this is absolutely true! Sleep is real bliss. A sleep at night is a break from stressful life during the day. Sleep can help find solutions to certain problems allowing the brain to think. You meet the subconscious when you get asleep.

In fact, sleep is a natural state of rest necessary for survival. Researchers haven’t got conclusive results concerning the real purposes of sleep. Sleep undergoes several stages. At times we realize different types of sleep in its different stages, and at other times, the stages are unclear.

Stages of Sleep

Sleep is generally grouped into 2 distinct stages, in particular, REM and NREM. In fact, rapid movements of eyes are typical for REM sleep; low muscle tone is commonly seen in humans and other mammals in this stage. The dreams you remember after sleep, are the ones happening in the REM phase.

The non-REM sleep includes 4 different stages. In this stage a significantly lesser amount of dreams takes place. Sleepwalking is observed in the non-REM sleep stage. The 4 stages of NREM sleep are called N1, N2, N3 and finally N4.

Stage N1 can be described as the drowsy sleep phase, in which people may have hallucinations and experience twitches. In this stage the loss of conscious awareness and muscle tone occurs. Brain transitions are seen in this stage, namely from alpha to theta waves. It is in stage N1 when sleep takes you away.

In Stage N2 muscular activity reduces and the external environment awareness disappears. Stage N2 is characterized by the brain activity aimed at trying to stop processing. In short, during this stage the brain surrenders to the sleep.

Stage N3 is commonly characterized by sudden feeling of terror and walking in sleep. Bed-wetting can happen during this sleep stage as well. Mostly, the stage N3 is the specific transition to the 4th stage. This is a phase of a deep sleeping. In this stage the sleep is engulfing your brain.

Stage N4 is a stage characterized as the phase with the most deep sleep pattern. As some researchers state, it is possible to combine the 3rd and the 4th sleep stages and call the period as delta sleep. People in this stage are fast asleep, and fly away in the sleeping world.
