Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

It is natural for the mother to take care of her unborn child and make sure that everything went well. This means that she is attentive to her health and habits in the first place. It is no news that the health and well-being of a future baby depends wholly on the mother and therefore it is essential that she was well.

It is natural for the mother to take care of her unborn child and make sure that everything went well. This means that she is attentive to her health and habits in the first place. It is no news that the health and well-being of a future baby depends wholly on the mother and therefore it is essential that she was well.

It is great when a mother understands it; however, there are women who prefer to neglect recommendations and do not really take into consideration the risk they can put their future baby under by sticking to the bad habits or the like.

This especially refers to a woman’s drinking in the first place. The key point here is that alcohol in any amount can cause damage to an unborn baby and this is no joke. This is also a very serious issue because alcohol abuse in mothers is responsible for such a condition as fetal alcohol syndrome. It is a rare but very serious condition but still it affects more children in the U.S. that one can imagine

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) develops due to the alcohol consumption by a mother in the period of pregnancy. It is so serous and dangerous as it is fraught with a lot of complications majority of which are irreversible. A baby with this diagnosis is born with physical and mental alternations; there are behavioral changes as well. As long as the baby is born like this, there is nothing to be done about it. However, the condition can be prevented while a mother is pregnant by stopping any alcohol consumption no matter how weak the spirits are. Fetal alcohol syndrome can be described as a compounding of symptoms all evoked by alcohol and they are also known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Alcohol reaches a fetus through bloodstream and affects it because it is not in the powers of an unborn baby to metabolize so much of the substance that is harmful for an adult let alone a baby. But adults can deal with it without any serious consequences while a fetus cannot. Here come the effects when alcohol concentration in the body rises to the utmost and different functions of the organism get interfered with. So, oxygen and nutrient interchange gets imbalanced and, consequently, organ growth gets distorted. Fetal alcohol syndrome means that it is very likely that nervous system will get damaged and heart problems will develop. The risk of a baby developing this condition increases proportionally to the amount of alcohol that a mother consumes.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is fraught with many severe consequences. However, one of the severest is mental retardation. The level of it is individual in every case and can be accompanied with many other symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome. Among them are heart and nervous system problems, microcephaly, sleeping problems in the future, also troubles with hearing and vision, various learning disorders and tendency to social withdrawal. Kids with this disorder are generally unsociable and have bad coordination and poor motor skills. The list of problems is very broad; let’s say that mother’s drinking at pregnancy never goes without producing an effect on her future baby. The question is how severe these effects will be.

One of the distinctive alternations resulting from a mother’s drinking is the distortion of facial features of a baby. They manifest themselves in the eye openings that are smaller than normal and also flat cheekbones. Indistinct philtrum (the nose and the upper lip have the groove inbetween which has got the name) and it makes the kids with fetal alcohol syndrome easily recognizable.

As it was mentioned before, the condition is not treatable as there is nothing that can be done to the alternations that took place so early in a life of a baby. In some cases the symptoms can be alleviated but that is all. Kids with severe form of a condition have to learn in special institutions frequently. This is not a very happy life scenario for any baby. That is why it is important that a pregnant woman stayed away from any kind of alcohol for a whole period of pregnancy.
