Eating disorders among girls with type 1 diabetes
Problems in eating behavior can be stubborn and tend to exacerbate. Often they go in a clinically relevant and eating disorders manifest over. Both forms are more common among adolescent girls and young women with type 1 diabetes than in the comparison group without diabetes and also attract more serious health consequences. A risk of metabolic control and an increased risk for hospital stays, as well as the diabetes-related health complications are the result.
One aim of this prospective study was to trigger for the emergence of eating disorders in teenagers and young women with type 1 diabetes. Under the definition of binge-eating disorder were eating (the so-called "scavenger attacks), abuse of Drainage and exhausting means, omit insulin doses, strict weight control, induced vomiting and excessive physical activity for weight control.
A total of 126 girls aged 9-13 years with type 1 diabetes over a period of 5 years with the help of standardized interviews about eating disorders investigated. 101 of the participants pointed to the initial investigation stage and no eating disorders in this study could be included. Of these 101 participants 45 participants developed an eating disorder during the five-year follow-up period. The study showed that two factors lead to eating disorders: depression, which already 1-2 years before the start eating and increased engagement with their own weight and character that has an influence on the self-esteem of young people.
Eating disorders manifest to develop very low and that early intervention for adolescent girls with type 1 diabetes in the development of a positive self-image, in relation to the weight and physical appearance, a protective nature has.
